Crypto.com Restructures Around AI, Starting With 180 Pink Slips

CEO Kris Marszalek says companies that don't pivot to AI immediately will fail – and he's restructuring his workforce to prove it

Crypto.com is laying off approximately 180 employees — roughly 12% of its global workforce — with CEO Kris Marszalek framing the cuts not as a response to market conditions but as a deliberate restructuring around artificial intelligence.

"Companies that do not make this pivot immediately will fail," Marszalek wrote on X on Thursday. "Companies that move slowly will be left behind." All affected staff at the Singapore-headquartered exchange have been notified and are receiving transition support, he said.

The announcement is impossible to separate from the context Marszalek himself created six weeks ago. In February, Crypto.com paid $70 million in cryptocurrency for the domain AI.com — the largest publicly confirmed domain purchase in history, more than double the previous record. Marszalek launched the site with a Super Bowl commercial promoting a personal AI agent platform capable of executing tasks such as trading, scheduling, and messaging, though the site crashed under traffic immediately after the ad aired. The layoffs now give that bet an operational dimension: AI.com is not just a branding exercise, but the stated rationale for restructuring the company around a smaller, AI-augmented headcount.

It is a pattern consistent with how Marszalek has built the business. He acquired the crypto.com domain for an estimated $5–12 million in 2018 and built it into one of the world's largest exchanges, with over 150 million registered users, later striking a $700 million naming rights deal for what is now Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The logic has always been the same: secure the defining brand asset first, then build the business to justify it.

The SEC formally closed all probes into Crypto.com in March 2025, removing a regulatory overhang that had weighed on the company. With that cleared, Marszalek appears to be moving quickly — the AI.com launch, the Super Bowl spot, and now a workforce reduction, all within two months.

Whether the AI pivot delivers the "level of scale and precision previously impossible" he promised his departing staff remains to be seen.
