The Sandbox Turns Hong Kong IRL Locations Virtual

Table of Contents

The Sandbox is bringing real-life Hong Kong locations to its metaverse with its Mega City 2 expansion.

Beginning on 28 April 2022, the LAND sale will list 38 virtual locations on OpenSea for auction. Each new entrant will launch their own premium NFT collections.

Among the iconic locations hosted by The Sandbox is Ocean Park to commorate its 45th anniversary. Visitors can explore new virtual gaming experiences, explorations and animal interactions. Ocean Park’s most iconic symbols will also be issued as NFTs.

Standard Chartered will also be represented in the expansion. The virtual land aims to build new experiences for clients and the community in the metaverse through SC Ventures’ Fintech Bridge.

Regal Hotels will offer the first green metropolis in The Sandbox too – MetaGreen. Its goal is to inspire people to achieve carbon net zero by 2050 by promoting sustainable living and incentivizing eco-friendly behavior. Using immersive play-to-earn experiences, Regal Hotels will provide a bridge between virtual gaming and the real world and NFT assets.

Tatler Asia hopes to shape the future of luxury in The Sandbox with exclusive collaborations with prestigious brand partners. It will also host the first-ever ball in the metaverse in partnership with M+ museum.

EVI Services Limited, Brinc, Gameone, Chord Hero and UFO School are among the other Hong Kong companies participating in the expansion.

The move comes as Hong Kong is making serious steps into blockchain tech and the metaverse. Last month, it was revealed that Hong Kongers will soon be treated to their very own metaverse – Air World.

Figures from Gemini also show that crypto adoption is rapidly rising in Hong Kong. Some 24% of Hong Kongers own crypto –  which is even higher than the UK (18%) and US (20%) – with more than half (51%) making their first investment in 2021.
